The Unfinished Church, St. George

#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in St. George
Explore The Unfinished Church a historic landmark of the town, only 15 minutes from the center of St. George. Many stories exist as to why the cathedral was never completed. The construction began in 1874, and was supposed to feature a Gothic façade. With no roof constructed, lush green grass grows where the church aisles should be and the support pillars have crumbled and are covered in mould. Despite the church's incomplete structure, it has been frequently used for wedding ceremonies in the past. • This is a beautiful and extremely photogenic location to visit when on the Island. It's a quick walk up the hill from the main square in St George. We didn't go inside but took some great photos from the street which turned out great. Highly recommended to visit.
  • This church is managed by The Bermuda National Trust and it's a apparently a popular tourist attraction here in Bermuda. The local residents advised us that there were a lot of Islanders and other non resident people getting married inside the structure. The structure was apparently started in 1874 but was not completed. That gave rise to the Bermuda Cathedral which was started a few years later and became a focal point here in Bermuda. This stop was definitely worth visiting and listening to the locals tell the story of the Scottish architect William Hay who started the structure at that time.
