The Belize Sign Monument, Belize City

Current goals:

~Formal Sign Language instruction in the Education department of the University and eventually an interpreting program as well.

~Deaf services, starting at the basic level of Sign Language instruction and Signing models for deaf babies and children. Sign Language classes for parents and siblings of deaf children. Sign Language and English workshops/tutoring for Deaf adults who were not able to be provided with education to match their needs.

~To aid in creating sustainable deaf services for Belizeans BY Belizeans.

I have been speaking to and emailing anyone and everyone who will listen about the importance of instructing deaf children using Sign Language and the value and right of deaf children to receive an education equal to that of hearing students. (Taught in Sign Language either directly by the teacher, or through an interpreter, including the opportunity to progress to Tech or University.)

It is vital for children to have fluent language communication with thier families. When parents and siblings are given the opportunity to learn Sign Language, the chance of communication breakdown in the home becomes nearly nil. Behavior issues, lower level learning and delayed and/or low language all stem from lack of communication and therefore, learning, in the home.

Awareness has been creeping forward since July 2012. I am excited by the anticipation of changes and improvements in the near future!

Slow, baby steps~~Keep smiling, keep looking up and keep moving forward! :-)

  • Just get a picture of the Belize sign to show you were here in my Beautiful country make it known to the world
  • Brought my 2 year old for his firstbtrip to Belize and took him to the Belize monument atlnd playground. A couple vendors were there and 1 of them used the table and chair to display his goods. He also moved me and my son away while we were tsking our photo so he could cater to a group of other tourists who arrived in a van. Both vendors used vulgar language in the park and dimin8dhed the experience.
