Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), Antwerp

View animal habitats as 19th-century travelers did at Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin), the oldest zoo in the country. Established in 1843, the zoo originally reflected director Jacques Kets' vision to promote the zoological and botanical sciences. Over the years the attraction added primates, African species, and a sampling of animals from almost every environment. In the 20th century, the zoo was updated with larger habitats that mimic the animal's home. Hippos, penguins, sea lions, and elephants all have public feeding times; pick up a printed schedule of feedings and caretaker chats from the ticket kiosk. To keep you energized, there are two sit-down restaurants and picnic areas where you can enjoy your own lunch. Purchase tickets onsite or online. Visit the zoo's website for seasonal ticket promotions. Free wheelchairs and special tours for visitors with decreased mobility are available upon request. By using our Antwerp day trip site, you can arrange your visit to Antwerp Zoo (Dierentuin) and other attractions in Antwerp.

  • Fantastic experience, we spent hours walking around and could have stayed a lot longer. Loved the marine life area and the nocturnal bit was special too. The butterfly garden was also spectacular.  more »
  • The Antwerp zoo is a real city. Because of its age, we find the old animal housing perfectly used within the new made enclosures.  more »

  • Was very saddening to see all the beautiful animals depressed in the captivity. And why on earth they have exotic animals in Belgium? Nothing natural about having animals in cages and have loud noises/kids all day around. You can learn more about these animals from documentaries, rather than in these jails, called zoos 👎👎
  • Spent almost six hours walking round, not cheap to get in and some animals were not there as work being undertaken on pens. Enjoyed our time though and managed to see everything we wanted. Would definitely recommend to others.
