The Third Man Museum, Vienna

4.9
#16 of 115 in Museums in Vienna
Dedicated to a 1948 film starring Orson Welles, The Third Man Museum appeals to movie buffs and history enthusiasts. Shot in 1948 in Vienna, "The Third Man" originally received mixed reviews and only ran in theaters for a few weeks. Today, the film is considered a classic thanks to its evocative portrayal of a damaged city in the years immediately following World War II. The museum contains a collection of film-related artifacts, including signed photos of stars, posters, and a 1930s projector used to screen a short clip from the black-and-white movie. • Of course you should know the film. In the museum you get a lot of background information about the film and about the Vienna of the post-war period. The "mistakes in the film" have been particularly stuck: falling foliage in the final scene as well as the original grid where you could have seen the fingertips at most - which, however, would not have possessed the drama by far. Also interesting: the hype around penicillin in the forties. Today, antibiotic sones are much more restrained. Resistant germs were not known at the time. All in all: An impressive collection and a must for cineastes!

  • If you're a fan of the third man movie this museum is for you. The museum is own by a husband and wife duo, both are very familiar with the film and knowledgeable. The museum consists of three neighboring buildings. Two of the buildings have interesting memorabilia and the other building has artifacts from the time the movie is set (post world War 2). Overall the museum was an interesting experience, however, if you want the full experience you need to have seen the movie
  • Well. You need to love the film (and why wouldn't you? ) to appreciate the Museum. But the Vudnna context room was very interesting for all. And we were lucky to see the Zither concert as well. Lovely people!
