Plan a Vienna trip in moments using our itinerary builder.
The Imperial Chapel was first mentioned in records in 1296. It is located in the “Schweizerhof”, the oldest part of the Imperial Palace. For several hundreds of years it was the most important place of religious worship of the Habsburg dynasty. Over the centuries the chapel was redecorated several times, however major parts of its medieval architecture and appearance have been preserved.
The Vienna Imperial Court Music Ensemble is one of the oldest musical institutions in Europe, its beginnings can be traced back to the High Middle Ages. In 1498 emperor Maximilian I. decreed the reorganization of the imperial musicians who were hereafter to perform regularly at the Viennese court (and especially the Imperial Court Chapel) – this was the time of birth of the Imperial Court Music Ensemble that exists until today. The Musicians of this Ensemble are today members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Boys‘ Choir, members of State Opera Men's Choir and the School of Gregorian Chant of the Imperial Chapel.

During the mass, they are on the third floor of the gallery at the bottom of the church. Our places were in the front row of one of the sides of the first gallery which allowed us to see them already during the rehearsal before and during the mass. At the end of the mass, they descend to the altar and sing one more song so that all present can see them. The choir and musicians really are very good, which makes the mass special, even for those who do not understand the language. In relation to the seats of the gallery: only the first row has vision for the altar and the boys singers; The other queues can follow only through the TV, since the visibility is well compromised. It was worth it to have gone.

We chose tickets in the 5th row after the altar 74 euros and it was a mass in German, which I expected, but I thought the children Cantarian beside the altar. But they are in the part of the choir to the top of the chapel, nobody sees them, if they knew I could buy the cheapest tickets. They sing about 4 songs and the last one sang at the altar, thank you very much. I would prefer a concert exclusively, without my, but considering the Elevadisimo cost.
Amazing messa concert with Vienna boys
Nothing special... I believe, that this chorus is recodered and played by MP3...
