Haus des Meeres - Aqua Terra Zoo, Vienna

4.3
Watch out for free-flying birds and free-running monkeys at Haus des Meeres - Aqua Terra Zoo. Housing over 10,000 aquatic beings, and home to the country's first saltwater aquarium, the zoo offers a panoramic view of the city from the terrace of the building. Made from German bunkers used during World War II, the zoo has animals like crocodiles and snakes in the terrarium section; sharks, sea turtles, and corals in the tropical seawater section; and anemones, shells, crabs, sea urchins, and starfish in the Mediterranean sea section. Enjoy light refreshments at the cafe on the terrace as you take in the views of the city. Be sure to check the zoo's website for feeding schedules and special events. • Kids loved the place, truly remarkable what a non profit org has accomplished . Liked the large shark tank, the cartoon like turtle, the sea horses and what not. Was not expecting to see mockeys wondering freely around visitors and this was an unique experience. The fact it is built in an ex WWII command tower and the fact the place is sprinkled with data about the history of the building was also nice.
  • This was a nice aquarium, also featuring lizards, ants, monkeys and other land creatures. My kids really enjoyed it. One of the highlights was the tank of cleaner fish that you can put your hands into. The fish come up and clean your hands, which tickles and the kids had a great time at this exhibit. The only negative is the difficulty for those with mobility issues. There is an elevator, but if there are a lot of people, can be difficult to get around. I would recommend going earlier in the day if mobility is an issue for you.
