Franziskanerkirche, Salzburg

4.6
A fusion of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles, Franziskanerkirche represents one of Salzburg's oldest churches. Stop by the church, located in the heart of the city's Old Town, and admire the exterior's medieval construction, dating from the 1200s. Its footprint is squat, its roof is relatively steep, and its facade features high arched windows. Make your way inside and note the change in appearance as you transition through the naves and vaulted ceilings to the original basilica. Wander through the different chapels within, and be sure to view the religious works of art and Baroque decorations that contrast with the rest of the building. • It is one of the oldest churches in the city: born in the Romanesque style, it is affected by the changes and renovations carried out in later eras, thus presenting Gothic and Baroque elements. Quite simple facade, but beautiful interior, especially the main altar in red and gold marble, with a Madonna with Child in the center.

  • In my opinion, this one even more beautiful than the main Cathedral in town and very unique with it's 12 chapels around alter - never have seen this! All different, wonderful history, great location, ...  more »

  • Another gothic style church. Some of the features quite interesting. I’m not sure I’m a fan of the e posed brick interior but it’s a cheaper building material from marble. The towering columns were impressive and still amazes me that they were able to construct these types of buildings. Well worth having a look
  • A top sight in Salzburg - Romanesque origins but lofty central gothic choir sets this impressive ancient church apart. Retains some Fresco's on pillars and piers, and for once the baroque elements enhance rather than overwhelming. Still a Franciscan church, a good place for mass.
