Learn about the history and the importance of "white gold" at Salt Mine Hallein, the world's oldest salt mine. The mine dates back at least 7,000 years to the time of the Celtic tribes. It has served as a museum since World War I. Take part in a treasure hunt by following the mysterious, ancient miners' tunnels into the mystical mountain. Take a 400 m (1,300 ft) electric train ride to reach two sets of 42 m (138 ft) wooden slides. Slide down to the lower level of the mine on a wooden rail. Salt Mine Hallein Reviews
Good tour, guide was very informative. Nice hike down to Hallein and museum was great. Celtic Village was also interesting. Great views of the valley. more »

We arrived a little by chance and unfortunately we learned on the spot that we should have downloaded the app from the site and have headphones for the French translation for our children... we ourselves are perfectly bilingual...
Great experience - especially when traveling with kids (note - age 4 and above) as the train and the slides are very nice. But even when traveling without kids this is a must-see. The salt mining history in the Salzburg area and mechanics behind mining in within the mountains are fascinating.
About a 2 hour drive from Munich we visited on a Sunday. It’s advisable to precook your tour time then you can skip the queues and go straight through to the changing area. Your given boiler suits to protect your clothes and keep you warm! The tour takes around an hour and your provided with a small audio unit to listen to facts about the mine. The highlight of the tour for us was the wooden slides!
