Manly Beach, Sydney

4.5
#1 of 476 in Beaches in Australia
Manly Beach stands as one of the best places to experience Australian beach culture. Captain Arthur Phillip gave the sandy area its name based on his perception of the masculine behavior of the indigenous people he met when he arrived in 1788. Now the long sandy beaches also are home to trendy shops and nightclubs. If you want activity, try surfing, windsurfing, parasailing, snorkeling, or scuba diving. If you prefer leisure, enjoy a picnic on the sheltered beach of Manly Cove. Only 11 km (7 mi) from downtown Sydney, the beach is easily accessible from Circular Quay via regular ferry or fast catamaran. • We took the Manly (Fast) Ferry. Spent half day at the beach (which was a quick 10 minute walk from the ferry). Then walked back for a quick lunch on the harbor while we waited for the next ferry. Lots...  more »
  • Cross the harbour in one of the ferries to Manly Beach. The trip is great and the destination even better. It has a great boulevard with palm trees, which give it a subtropical look.  more »

  • Beautiful place for a romantic dinner and a stroll along the beachfront Sunsets are awesome Lots to do in the daytime shipping and an open air market on Sundays fresh organic fruit and veg can be purchased Access to Manly is best by ferry from circular quay the service is quite good and the timetable is very accurate It's found online when searching for transport between the two locales
  • A must see in Sydney, take the ferry to manly and enjoy the views. Really a good beach
  • Nice pubs and bars along the harbour. We had bad luck with the blue jellyfishes which “attacked” the beach and people were recommended to take another beach for bathing. Couldn’t really get the point with life guards and the strong current warnings. Overall we had a great day.
  • Gorgeous area; Manly Beach is clean and tidy, within walking distance of plenty of stores and about 10 minutes from the wharf. Shelly Beach and the nature reserve are only about 10 minutes' walk from there, and totally worth it!
  • Manly Beach is beautiful at Sunrise and a good sized beach to find a quiet spot. Most visitors don't realise that Manly has a choice of 14 other ocean and harbour beaches. Manly has 130 cafes, bars and restaurants to check out along with some amazing walks.

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
