Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park

4.8
Located inside the sprawling Purnululu National Park, a World Heritage Site, Bungle Bungle Range is a range of beehive-like mounds composed of ancient quartz sandstone, which was eroded over a period of 20 million years. These unusual and imposing towers, with steeply sloping surfaces distinctly marked by regular orange and black stripes, hide a world of gorges and pools, with palms growing out of crevices in the rocks. A circular topographic feature 7 kilometers (4.3 mi) in diameter is clearly visible on satellite images of the range, believed to be an eroded remnant of an ancient meteorite impact crater. Visitors to this area must carry their own food and water if they plan to use the park’s campgrounds for more than one day.
