Newcastle Ocean Baths, Newcastle

#5 of 20 in Outdoors in Newcastle
No visit to Newcastle is complete without taking a dip in historic Newcastle Ocean Baths, which opened in 1922. These baths are the city’s most recognizable landmarks, featuring a distinctive pavilion built in the Art Deco style. Lifeguard services are provided year round, every day of the week, making this a favorite location for inexperienced swimmers and families with small children. A separate area is designated for lap swimmers, and visitors can also access a nearby canoe pool, which is unpatrolled. The baths have been a popular meeting place for nearly a century, and many locals remember them fondly as the place where they first learned to swim. Stop by for a refreshing plunge on a hot day. • Iconic Newcastle. Join the early morning swimmers and the resident retirees for their morning water walks up and down the pool. Sun yourself on the bleachers and then brave the cool waters. Canoe pond nearby is excellent for small children, and to spot hermit crabs, or if you like a lazy float in warmer waters. There are warm showers in the change rooms and a recently revamped cafe/takeaway.
  • A very old complex but has a lot of charm as well, the water was freezing when we went unfortunately but previous times I have been it's been excellent, relatively clean, decent shower a d toilet facilities that you would very rarely have to wait to use. Good cafe on site but they can be a little expensive. Plenty of room in the water so you won't be on top of one a other either. Parking is almost non existent you have to grab a spot at your first chance really.
