Fort Scratchley, Newcastle

#4 of 85 in Things to do in Newcastle
Military Facility · Tourist Spot
A large collection of guns, cannons, and military objects awaits you at Fort Scratchley. Set high on a hilltop overlooking the ocean and the harbor, the fort provides a 360-degree view of the city of Newcastle, its beaches, and the harbor. The guns here fired at Japanese submarines in World War II make it the only fort in Australia to fire a shot in aggression. Take the guided tour to learn more about it. • A Lovely day out. Kids thoroughly enjoyed the canons, a must see and if you are lucky dolphins in the sea too  more »
  • Nice experience. Very interesting. A little uncomfortable on a windy day but that should stop you visiting.  more »
  • The place is a great spot to enjoy the views of the sands and the seas, the lighthouse, and the city while learning about the history of the fort. Also, there is no entrance fee but you can give donation. Closed on Tuesdays and opens until 4PM only.
  • Nice location to see a historic fort and surrounding beach views. From online posts, they seem to do canon firing in the past but may only do that on special occasions now. Free entry and can take photos. Guided tours have an additional cost. Parking at the site is free for 3 hours.
