Cave Gardens, Mount Gambier

Noted for its rose bushes, Cave Gardens provided fresh water to early European settlers in this area. The rose garden was planted over a century ago by Paul Krummel, the site’s first official curator. Stop by for a leisurely picnic on the grass, or venture down into the cave, accessible by suspended viewing platforms that reveal a vibrant underground world, located within walking distance of the center of the city. During heavy rains a waterfall forms from storm water overflow, eventually entering a deeper underground water system feeding the nearby lakes. The cave is lit during the night, making it a popular stop for after-dark explorers and adventurers. Plan a Mount Gambier trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • The cave gardens are centrally located in Mount Gambier next to the Jens Hotel. The cave gardens are not as impressive as the Umpherston cave but it is still worth a look. The gardens are tidy but...  more »
  • Visited on Saturday 22nd February, very interesting sinkhole in the centre of town. There is a good path so you can walk down to view it at close quarters.  more »

  • Not very big but its nice to look at and in central city area. Probably a 15min visit but it is not crowded and its quiet
  • Disappointed. Abandoned shopping trolleys, rubbish and a bike is what you will see here. Recommended by lovely young lady at tourist information. Someone attends the rose gardens surrounding cave garden beautifully. For an attraction in the centre of town its pretty sad to visit unless you want to smell the Roses. I put my camera away that sad.
