The Carlton Gardens is a World Heritage Site located on the northeastern edge of the Central Business District in the suburb of Carlton, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The 26ha site contains the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum and Imax Cinema, tennis courts and an award-winning children's playground. The rectangular site is bound by Victoria Street, Rathdowne Street, Carlton Street, and Nicholson Street. From the Exhibition building the gardens gently slope down to the southwest and northeast. According to the World Heritage listing the Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens are "of historical, architectural, aesthetic, social and scientific (botanical) significance to the State of Victoria."The gardens are an example of Victorian landscape design with sweeping lawns and varied European and Australian tree plantings consisting of deciduous English oaks, White Poplar, plane trees, elms, conifers, cedars, turkey oaks, Araucarias and evergreens such as Moreton Bay figs, combined with flower beds of annuals and shrubs. A network of tree-lined paths provides formal avenues for highlighting the fountains and architecture of the Exhibition building. This includes the grand allee of plane trees that lead to the exhibition building. Two small ornamental lakes adorn the southern section of the park. The northern section contains the museum, tennis courts, maintenance depot and curator's cottage, and the children's playground designed as a Victorian maze.Start your trip to Melbourne by creating a personalized itinerary on Inspirock.

We walked through the gardens, it was a lovely place to walk around. As with the rest of Melbourne it’s very easy to walk. more »
A great island of lush green close to the city. A wonderful place to picnic and jog. Lots of dogs to look at! Of course, the museum itself. It's free for students and a must visit. The glory of this place gets much better in the night lighting, especially the front fountain is extremely picturesque.
We spent about an hour and a half walking around the Gardens perimeter and then through the middle. This is a nicely set up garden with very mature trees giving beautiful shade on a green lawn. There were lots of families and folks either having a picnic or simply sitting on the grass reading a book or simply enjoying the nice breeze blowing through the park. The little ponds and the fountains are a lovely addition to the garden and adds an extra dimension to this place. We also like the fact the garden grounds connects seamlessly to the Royal Ex Building and the Melbourne Museum. The northern and north-eastern perimeter of this garden was very quiet and very shady due to the number of mature trees lining the walking path.
