Trip Planner South Pacific  /  Australia  /  Victoria  /  Gippsland

A huge region that stretches from the suburbs of Melbourne to the New South Wales border, Gippsland is an expanse of nature preserves and farmland that supply Melbourne's vegetables and cattle. Stunning natural wonders such as the Strzelecki Ranges, Gippsland Lakes, Walhalia, Baw Baw Plateau, and Phillip Island attract thousands of visitors throughout the year. Interestedly enough, the natural land is mostly infertile, lacking almost every mineral to grow food, but over the years artificial fertilization has yielded a large amount of crops. Gippsland is in Victoria. With our online itinerary creator, Australia vacations can be built around trips to Gippsland and other destinations in Australia.

Trails in Gippsland

Message from Tourism Australia
The wilderness region of Gippsland is enormous. From the city of Melbourne it stretches north-east to Victoria’s border with New South Wales (a distance of 542 kilometres, or 337 miles), covering the entire south-east corner of the Australian continent. It offers a host of wilderness and wildlife, great drives and gourmet treats. From Melbourne it takes about three hours by car to get to the popular holiday spot, Wilsons Promontory, and about four hours to drive to the coastal tourist town of Lakes Entrance. You can also drive the Great Alpine Road from the pretty town of Metung, on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes, up and over the Victorian High Country to Wangaratta in the north of Victoria.
