History of the Cruise Centre

In 1987, filling the obvious need for an environmentally sensitive river and rainforest tour, the Lafferty family developed the Daintree River Cruise Centre. Lee Lafferty was the ownder and the property is situated on private land. The Cruise Centre overlooks a wide and picturesque section of the river known as the tidal convergence zone, where warm seawater and cool freshwater meet and where the mangroves merge with the rainforest. We have our own private jetty that mores our fleet of 5 comfortable vessels, with excellent viewing capability and also covers for those days when the weather is a little inclement.

All amenities are provided and complimentary refreshments are served in a pleasant reception area that has many interesting displays on local flora and fauna, books and information. For those who wish to enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the river, there are picnic areas available, both covered and others outside on the lawns. The gardens are frequented by an array of beautiful and fascinating rainforest creatures. Visitors can see many species of birds, Endemic and Migratory, (Double Eyed Fig Parrots, Honeyeaters), frogs, (Whitelip Treefrog), reptiles (Water Dragons) and butterflies (Cairns Birdwing, Ulysses).

Our river boat tours are expertly guided by experienced naturalists in a quiet, comfortable vessel specifically designed for river conditions. Equipped with the most technologically advanced motors, OEDA 3 Rating 4 stroke Yamaha Motors, the vessels provide near silent propulsion with an absolute minimum of vibration, exhaust omission and wake. Short of rowing or sailing there is no more fuel efficient way of cruising. This is one of the reasons that we have been awarded “Eco Certified Advanced Level IV Eco Tourism” we have been advanced Eco Certified since 2000.

We are also ROC Certified (Respecting our Culture) and also won a Climate Action Award.

The Daintree River Cruise Centre strives to provide the best service possible whilst having as little impact on the environment as possible. It’s the aim of this company to be able to provide our guest with an interesting and eye-opening rainforest and river experience that will leave them with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Magnificent Daintree Rainforest.

Mick Casey solely operates Matilda IV catering for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers. Your guests can join him to watch the animals wake up with the day, on the 1 – 3 hour early morning tours, or maybe they would like to watch the egrets fly to their roosts upstream on sunset. (also a 1 – 3 hour tour).

There are also something different, 1 hour full moon trips. All tours are to be booked in advanced by calling the cruise centre during office hours or Mick at home on 07 4090 7762.

  • We showed up without a booking and they were more than happy to accommodate us for a tour. We did the tour in early Feb, their wet/quiet season and there were only three other people on the boat. The boat operator had some great knowledge of the area and knew where the "local" crocs were. There had been some flooding around the Daintree River about a week earlier. There was also record flooding much further south in Townsville that got a lot of national media attention. Unfortunately the media attention seemed to have scared off the customers, despite the Daintree River having gone back to normal. Come visit.... they're open!
  • We took a ride and saw some crocs, both big and small. The tour guide offered information on plants, trees, animals, and the region in general. Relaxing, scenic, informative and fun.
