#1 of 1,374 in Museums in Australia
Australian War Memorial pays tribute to Australians who fought in global conflicts. A large white building with a green dome serves as the site's focal point. It houses the commemorative area, including the Hall of Memory where the Tomb of the Australian Unknown Soldier lies. Inside, three walls of stained glass and four walls of mosaics depict Australian servicemen and women. In an outside courtyard, a memorial pool surrounds an eternal flame. A museum and archive details Australia's military involvement around the world. • This place is amazing! I had so much fun although am missing lots of knowledge when it comes to war and history. The free guided tour is very nice and helpful. The guide told us stories for 90 minutes and going across the whole place. He served in the army so you can imagine the knowledge and the excitement he has. It’s totally free of charge. For accessibility they have lifts. I spent 4 hours there and I felt like rushing things.
  • Incredible interesting place to visit. Somehow they have found the right balance to describe the tragedy and destruction of war, embody the solemn memory of the human loss of life and yet present an utterly interesting exhibition filled with an incredible array of authentic war relics, dioramas, theatre shows, etc. If you don't have much time, take a tour, available every hour, otherwise get lost wondering around the building for a few hours. You won't get bored and you will want to return. Hint - head to the cafe inside past the majority of the exhibitions, not to the cafe/restaurant outside in a separate building. Better prices and selection of casual foods.
  • MUST Visit place, specially when they offer you the free guide tour. That's the best time to learn about the World War -1 and 2. They explain so well, moreover, they have given touch screens in most of the places which support English,Hindi,Mandarin languages. well preserved and it's free entry.
  • Very friendly staffs here and car parking is free. I suggest visitors to donate some money to encourage such warm welcome place continue to exists for free to everyone. This is an educational place for kids and even adults. It reminds us the horrible nature of war. It is a well layout museum and prepare to spend a few hours here if you want to see everything.
  • Great memorial, well curated and maintained. Even having been there several times, enjoy reading all the captions, viewing dioramas and watching the montages. In my opinion - a must visit for anyone visiting Canberra.
