At Platypus House, you can experience an amazing animal from very close and in a very personal way. While there, you can see live platypuses and echidnas both playing and feeding. The place was established to increase understanding and awareness about monotremes, making it a great educational visit for school kids, families, and community groups. Photography is welcome. The onsite cafe, which overlooks the Tamar River, offers coffee and a selection of gifts. Unfortunately not in a natural environment. You get some information about both types and the guide was quite extensive. Amazing location right on the Tamar. The tour was excellent and had the kids engaged. My daughter was so delighted with the up close and personal encounter with the echidnas that she may have wet herself. Sorry about that. Good coffee!
The wharf warehouse seems like an unlikely place for a platypus museum but it was a good visit. The tour guide seemed quite knowledgeable on all things monotreme and got the kids on the tour engaged. The price is steep for the time you get but I certainly wasn’t looking for more time in the enclosure. I would have preferred the animals be kept in something that more closely resembles their natural habitat.
