Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / Western Australia / Albany / Desert Mounted Corps Memorial
Honoring the sacrifices made by Australia and New Zealand’s mounted soldiers who served overseas at the beginning of the 20th century, Desert Mounted Corps Memorial stands near the summit of Mount Clarence. The memorial consists of a bronze statue depicting an Australian soldier assisting a New Zealander whose horse had been fatally wounded in action. Originally erected at Egypt’s Port Said in 1932, the memorial was finally sent to Australia in 1960. Badly damaged during the anti-British riots of the 1950s, the memorial was painstakingly reconstructed before being placed at its current location. This important military monument is located near a historic spot from which the combined Australian and New Zealand troops (known as ANZAC) left to join World War I in November of 1914.
