Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, Adelaide

4.7
#6 of 29 in Parks in Adelaide
Garden · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
First opened in 1977, the crescent-shaped Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is situated on 97 hectares on the eastern slopes of Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills east of Adelaide in South Australia. The cooler, wetter location suits plants from temperate climates which are difficult to grow on the Adelaide Plains. Amongst the native Australian flora there are tree ferns, as well as exotic cultivated plants from cool climates including Rhododendron and Magnolia and the National Species Rose Collection. The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, together with the Adelaide and Wittunga Botanic Gardens, is administered by the Botanic Gardens of South Australia, a State Government statutory authority.

In 1980, it was listed on the now-defunct Register of the National Estate.

  • Very beautiful botanical garden, well maintained, clean, convenient access, large garden with a wide range of plant species. Great for light hiking with kids. Perfect for picnic, tables are available if needed but obviously plenty of green space to eat on the floor. Small coffee place but I don't think this is always open. Toilet available at different locations. Spring and Autumn are the best seasons to go.
  • This is my famous favourite place to go on school holidays or weekends. It's absolutely gorgeous and the entire gardens and scenery are just Devine. It's so peaceful and quiet you can hear the birds and all the nature around you. Autumn is our favourite time to go as it's a rainbow of autumn colors throughout the gardens. There are colorful unique flowers and plants that you really don't see anywhere else. You can picnic there with family and friends or just go for a romantic day out. Never get bored of going here.
