Admire exquisite frescoes depicting scenes from life the of the Holy Mother of God at Akhtala Monastery, a 10th-century fortified Armenian monastery perched on a hilltop by the north bank of the Debed River. Currently inactive and partially ruined on the outside, the monastery complex features some intricate stone carvings and elaborately designed facades, with giant crosses decorating the walls of the well-preserved Holy Mother of God Church. The complex stands out as a true masterpiece of Armenian stonemasonry, with some of the best-preserved murals in the country. You can take a guided tour around the site in one of three languages.
